In fact, they&#8217;re all over town and to be honest, the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, children in school used to have assignments on school, as spring returned, as so did the swallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#2072bb\" class=\"has-inline-color\">But why?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Which bird is this and what is its meaning? One of our guests asked us that very question, so we went out to find out by ourselves!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/andorinha_bordalo_pinheiro.jpg\" alt=\"andorinha portuguese swallow\" class=\"wp-image-1610\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It turns out that the bird is a swallow (<em>andorinha<\/em> in Portuguese) and it all started with one of the most well-known artists that Portugal has had <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rafael_Bordalo_Pinheiro\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro<\/a>. Bordallo Pinheiro in 1891 decided to produce a set of ceramic pieces that looked like swallows. The pieces quickly integrated into Portuguese homes and became a symbol for a Portuguese house that lives on still today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why it had such a massive success no one knows, but the reason may have to do with &#8230; love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pssst&#8230; Join our <strong> Food &amp; Drink Tours <\/strong>and discover a side of Porto that most tourists rarely see \u00bb<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The swallow is a migratory bird that always returns to the same place to nest, year after year. It is said to happen because a swallow only has one partner throughout its life. So it&#8217;s no wonder that the swallow is associated with values like Home, Family, Love, Fidelity and Loyalty which resulted in the exchange of these ceramic figures between lovers.
