Porto, Portugal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The sound of <em>Gr\u00e2ndola, Vila Morena<\/em> echoing through the streets. The scent of carnations in the air. Families marching, side by side. <em>25 de Abril sempre, fascismo nunca mais!<\/em><br><br>In Portugal, April 25 is Freedom Day (<em>Dia da Liberdade<\/em>), a national holiday marking the day in 1974 when the country broke free from a 50-year dictatorship, embracing freedom, equality, and fraternity.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of our favorite Portuguese words: <em>Liberdade<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year on April 25th, we remember the non-violent revolution that took place in 1974 and ended a 50-year-long dictatorship. It was a revolution ruled by songs and flowers that brought democracy and civil liberties to the Portuguese people. <em>E Depois do Adeus,<\/em> by Paulo Carvalho, and <em>Gr\u00e2ndola, Vila Morena<\/em>, by Zeca Afonso, were the two songs used as passwords on the radio transmission. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IVKf00VGjGM?si=VC9iwY5nALGnkf_R\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/center>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that day, instead of using their guns, the Portuguese military placed carnation flowers down the barrels and marched proudly. This flower is now a symbol of the Carnation Revolution and it translates the desire for freedom within each and every one of us.<br><br>Today, we honor the brave individuals who fought for justice and paved the way for a brighter future. Their sacrifices granted us the freedom to make choices \u2014 big and small \u2014 as we navigate life. <br><br>So, today, we don\u2019t just raise a glass. We remember. We honor. And we keep pushing forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Liberdade<\/em> is Portuguese for Freedom (on April 25 and every other day)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The freedom to choose between a fine-dining restaurant or a <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/tascas-in-porto-what-they-are-and-how-to-find-the-real-ones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cozy tavern<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/recipe-pudim-do-abade-de-priscos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The freedom to add pork to desserts<\/a> or fruit to salads;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to explore Lello Bookstore or <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/5-charming-bookstores-in-porto-beyond-lello-bookshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Poetria Bookstore<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to cruise along the Douro River or admire its beauty from Miradouro das Virtudes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to enjoy grilled chicken <em>(frango de churrasco<\/em>) after a day at the beach \u2014 or <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/sushi-restaurants-in-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sushi instead<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to sprinkle cinnamon on your custard tart or sip a refreshing limonete with your coffee;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to decorate your home with Portuguese tiles or furnish it with IKEA;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to find hidden gems in Porto\u2019s neighborhoods or stick to the touristy spots;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to savor a glass of port wine or <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/tour\/craft-beer-food-tour\/\">sample a refreshing Portuguese craft beer<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to swap \u201cv\u201d for \u201cb\u201d;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to prefer Porto over Lisbon;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/the-best-seafood-restaurants-in-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The freedom to choose grilled fish over shellfish<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to choose potatoes over rice. Or ignore the nutritionistas and <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/25-facts-about-portugal-foods-and-portuguese-eating-habits\/\">have both, as tradition dictates<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to listen to music at Casa da M\u00fasica or Mirajazz;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The freedom to indulge in <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/petiscos-the-meaning-behind-this-delicious-word\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a wide variety of Portuguese petiscos<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s our toast to freedom!
